I've only read the first one... does that say enough? It's good enough as a children's book, but even my (18 year-old) friends who l.ove it concede that the latest isn't very well written (but that's 2nd hand knowledge and I won't be able to support it). But - each to their own. Reading isn't doing anyone any harm. People who are die-hard readers aren't going to be dumber after reading Harry Potter. For others, they're the first real books they've ever read, and that's much better than reading nothing! If reading Harry Potter makes a non-reader want to read more books, then Harry Potter has served his purpose, and I'm only thankful.

| i'm glad the books give people pleasure and have gotten alot of people reading who might not have been reading before. It just seems to have become another one of those dumb popular culture fads and has become a commercial product too now that they have harry potter toys and games and everything and lots of stupid people like it who probably just like it because it's popular and they can't think for themselves. i personally have a tendency not to like what other people like unless it apeals to me personally. but there isn't nay harm in reading that is true. | |

Hrm...honestly, I enjoyed the early books, but the way the tonality of the series has shifted has been a bit off-putting. (Compare the wish-fulfillment filled, whimsical, gimmicky hero-plot first book to the dark, often angsty tone of the fifth and sixth, for example.) When it comes to character development, it makes good sense, but, with regards to the plot, its so obvious a conscious change that it makes it too to disconnect from the fictional world...so I've been much more pessimistic about the series of late.
Still, the fact that it's popular is no reason to dislike it. (It might certainly be a reason to expect it to be unlikeable, my misanthropic side will gve you that...but not a reason to dislike it in and of itself.)

| Harry Potter is REALLY good! If you don't like it, it is ur opinion. Do you think the millions of fans who LOVE Harry potter are mental? Opinions just differ.... | |

| no i don't think that they are mental but the ones who think that it is the greatest thing that ever happened to the world have probably never been exposed to better reading. | |

| Some books which you might call 'better' than Harry potter, maybe considered as rubbish by others. It just depends on the individual's opinion. If you think you don't like Harry potter, fine, it is ur opinion. But don't you go telling everybody that 'Harry potter sucks', cuz it does not! | |

*dies*
Not to interject into a conversation as silly as this...but isn't a little self-contradictory, if not hypocritical, to first state that the quality of a book is relative, in that it is up to the individual...and then insist the a certain series of books has such an absolute standard of quality that one cannot even say that it sucks?

| Harry Potter isn't spoiling to your intelligence. Not any book spoils an intellect. All it does is inspire your mind by reading new novels or giving you a sense of adventure. | |
