Modern Greek
Hello all, I'm writing this little article today to speak to you about an awesome language that many people don't know too much about: Greek! I've been a Greek major at UNH for the last three years now, but before that I was trying to self-teach from books my mom bought me on Amazon. I first went to Greece my junior year of high school, and I've got to tell you, the Greeks are quite possibly the friendliest group of people I've ever met.

I mean granted, most countries are very anti-America right now, they didn't judge my friends and I for our country's messed up policies. One couple I met taught us Greek dances inside their store at 10:30 at night, and even though they weren't an exchange office, they changed our dollars into Euros for so much less of a commission than an exchange store would do it for. The country itself is absolutely breathtaking, from the mountains to the sea, and the history that comes from there is basically what has made all modern-day civilization possible. Think about it; arithmetics, politics, democracy, philosophy, architecture, etc.

So anyway, that is my reasoning behind wanting to learn it. Now to the actual learning part. First of all, as many of you probably know, they have a completely different alphabet, but once you learn the sounds and the letters, it's just like any other language. If any of you have taken Latin, French or Spanish, it's the same idea. All verbs are organized into three different people, plural and singular, and the nouns are declined based on subject, direct object, possessive, etc. It's also such a beautiful language, and I love that it is almost a secret since with other languages people can usually at least sound it out, but to look at a page full of Greek writing can overwhelm someone (and make them think you're wicked smart).

The only pet peeve I really have with it, is when stupid sororities and fraternities use the Greek alphabet, know why? Because they do not pronounce ANY SINGLE LETTER, NOT ONE correctly. It's like, if you're going to steal something from another culture, at least learn to say it right. So if any of you are in a frat or sorority, I think you need to take a few modern Greek lessons just to learn how to not be an idiot.

You can comment now. Let me know if this interested you, or if you speak Greek or are taking it. You know, any other kinds of comments or questions.

i don't really think it's something you can teach online or anything since you realy need to be able to be with someone and learn how it sounds. I am still realy bad at understanding people, like I need my Prof. to slow it down a lot when seh speaks to me because I can't translate quickly enough in my head, I'm much better and reading and writing it. But I would sugest to check out Amazon ro Borders bc they have books and dvds and such that can help you out. Also those Rosetta Stone cds are spposed to be really bomb from what I've heard. I'd say anyways the best way to start is being comfortable with the letters, learning how to pronounce them and write them, etc, and from there it's much easier because you've buit the foundation.
