Ebonics vs. Sonics
At my high school, theres mostly two languages spoken: 'Sonics' (Stoner Talk) and 'Ebonics' (Ghetto Talk). It's amazing how different it is. Personally, I'm more of a 'Sonic'.

Everyday I walk into school and at least once get commented on the way I talk and I sure raise my eyebrows countless times at the Ebonics Slang.

Yesterday for example, I had a run in and I barely understood a word he said.

Me: Dude, what the c***, what are you trippin on? You need to mad chill.
The Kid: I ain't your dude, tryin' to diss me out like a po catchin' a deboer.
Me: Was that English?

Seriously, our English language barely exists. We have the word "baby's daddy" in the dictionary. That's sad. We need an Urban Dictionary to understand our fellow students. We can't listen to a new rap song without questioning its meaning. "Laffy Taffy," is that a butt? "My humps," etc.

The sad part is it's not just a phase we go through. Little 6 year olds are running around saying, "How you is?" My teachers speak like they're on an acid trip.

This is why everyone is stereotyped and considered 'Uh-oh Oreos' and other racist comments, because sadly if you're white we're expected to talk a certain way and same goes for blacks. Typing online is also different.

Sonics: Hey man, you wanna chill at s8zone?
Ebonics: Sup Dawg h!T me ^ s0met!me.

Talking l!3k Th!$ t@k3z tw!c3 @$ l0nq 2 typ3 if u r3@lli Th!nk b0uT !t.

Will this generation be doomed to this new language? You decide the next time you write a text message or talk to your best friend.

i think that my entire school is all "sonics". same at my last school. i don't think i've actually really haerd anyone talking any other way, except back in china, and that's expected. this whole thing just depends on the area i guess. i'm a st. louis area guy, and it all seems the same here. besides generational difference, and most of it stays about the same anyway.

I think it is a question of identity, like trying to be as different from the other group as possible, like Jocks and Burnouts. Maybe you can also see the differences in clothes and places where kids hang about.
Question is, where is all this going to end up? Will Americans not be able to understand each other one day? Truth is, it's not only Sonics or Ebonics but Latins and Asian and so on. May be we'll learn to talk when we actually need to get a job and talk like grown ups. In the meantime, it's just fun 'playing around' with language!

I'm an English person. Nice to meet you Mr. Sonic guy.
Honestly, I think a lot of slang is stupid. I have to admit though, I use my own slang every now and then. But I can help it if I'm surrounded by it all day.
Honestly, I don't see anything cool with replacing 'o' with '0' and 'to' with '2' or 'i' with '!'.
No wonder we suck.

At my college everyone using the same slang. Our slang changes with each generation, but it's something everyone uses. There are terms used by potheads that not everyone else uses but it's because those who don't smoke it don't enter that world where you buy, smoke, and have run ins with the police and there are words for those things.

I guess you live in a completelydiffrnt place than me because everyone uses the same words here. It's really a mixture. Like a white kid and a black kid could be hanging out and the white kid would be like "Hey dude, I'm bouta head to my crib" and the black kid would be like "Cool, I'll holla". Anytime there's a new word everyone learns and uses it he way they want to, we all understand each other cause it's too diverse not to.

I live in the south, so the only languages we have are Ebonics and redneck. And it's sad that the teachers today are like that; it makes understanding stuff hard. I guess I'm the only person I know who speaks properly, because I come from Australia, but other people like to make fun of my "English" accent.

I live in Maine and we basically have our own language. Someone who moved here from out west learns new words all the time and is always asking us what it means, and its wierd because u know what they mean, but ppl from everywhere else doesnt..and ppl always say our accents are wierd because we dont say our r's..i agree that it basically just depends on where u are from.

It always depends on how each person is raised and where in fact you live. In my part of South Carolina, white and black people speak with Ebonics. Very Few people speak the "proper" way. I really haven't heard people talk like that since EVER!

I think I'll stick to my Southern roots, saying "how're y'all?" and "that ain't right". Of course, you'll never see those terms in my English essays...

not "had".

Ebonics aren't any less ignorant sounding when blacks speak them. In fact...possibly even moreso, if it's obvious the person is educated.

Hm, interesting...
I guess I'm more of a Sonic . I had "Ebonic" talk.
