I don't read many comics but there is one that I do read obsessively and if you think comics are retarded and stupid, this one would change your mind. It has nothing to do with superheroes, it's not meant to make you laugh (some parts are funny though), but it is simply amazing. At one time The Sandman was bought an issue at a time, but now the the series ended but you can buy them in volumes of about 200 pages each, there are 10 volumes. The story is about the personifications of Dream Death Delirium Desire Despair Destruction and Destiny. The series are mainly centered on Dream. But Death is a usual regular. The story telling is fantastic and almost reminds me of children's stories.. if it wasn't so dark. And the characters are just wonderful and you really become attached to them (my favorite being Delirium, a very weird girl with rainbow hair and 2 colored eyes who wears a lot of ripped up fishnet and talks nonsense most of the time).

If you like sandman, check out Watchmen. That story has nuclear war, religion, superheroes (well, one, and he's a isolated god), vigilantism, rape, nazi sympathisizers (who happens to be gay and a super hero), gays and lesbians (superheroes again), news vendors (a blue collar right wing know it all), detectives, insanity and mental illness (several characters have serious problems), genius (one superhero is brillaint and a sellout), history (with many differences, like nixon still be president and vietnam being free), government cover-ups, and a conspiracy theory all tied into one main storyline. That story is so complex and deep, that its actually used in several colleges to teach literature, and is normally considered the best comic ever written. In fact, after writing this post I think I'll post a review of the story.
